First Steps
First Steps Early Literacy
A program for the Ossining School District community.
First Steps/Primeros Pasos Program, provides bilingual (English/Spanish) early literacy and family support services to families in the Ossining community. For over two decades, this program has played an essential role in supporting the development of children ages 0-4, with a focus on helping prepare them for prekindergarten and promoting strong connections with families and the larger community. Since its inception in 2002, the program has positively impacted over 5,200 families.
First Steps is generously funded by the Sexauer Foundation. Additionally, partnerships with local organizations, such as the Katonah Museum of Art, Teatown Lake Reservation, and EnuBuilds, enhance the program by offering visual arts, nature education, and varied programming targeting early childhood development.
First Steps offers the following three early childhood educational programs.
2-Year-Old
First Steps' 2-Year-Old program provides parent/child educational classes to Ossining families. With thoughtful program planning, we aid our earliest learners in communication and language development, learning foundational academic concepts, and developing social and emotional skills. This age-appropriate program is held once a week, with the option of coming to the morning or afternoon program. This class requires parent involvement and is not a drop-off program. Registration and regular attendance is required. This program begins in September of each year and ends in May. Graduates of our 2-year-old program are invited to attend our 3-year-old program the next school year. Register here.
3-Year-Old
First Steps' 3-year-old program is sometimes referred to as our “Little School”. Children enroll in a four-day per week, half-day educational program, with caregiver participation required every Monday. Students participate in lessons to expand their communication and early literacy skills, cognitive development, build foundational math skills, strengthen their fine and gross motor skills, and learn about self-care. During our interactive Mondays each week, caregivers stay at school to guide their children through learning activities led by their teacher. Students are dropped off Tuesday through Thursday, learning independence to prepare them for the next step of their educational journeys.
First Steps Fridays
First Steps Fridays offers educational programming to families with children from birth to age 4. During First Steps Fridays, we provide a variety of early childhood learning activities targeted to toddlers, preschoolers, and their families. This engaging program helps our earliest learners to develop cognitive, social-emotional, language, and physical skills. During these high-energy classes, young learners can expect to sing and dance along to the alphabet song, explore their creative sides, and make friends. Through collaborating with local organizations, we offer a diverse range of classes. In the morning, First Steps Fridays is held at the school, while additional programming is held at Ossining Public Library Friday afternoons. Registration is not required and First Steps Fridays is open to all Ossining residents with children up to age 4.
