Superintendent of Schools Dear Colleagues, Parents, Guardians, Students, Residents, Friends, and Neighbors:
Congratulations to the students and adults in our entire Ossining Schools Families who continue to make this a most exceptional year! For a review of some of the accomplishments that continue to mount in these last weeks of the school year, please review our “Did you know that…? and “We are proud that…” section that highlights many of these achievements. You can read all about them here!
We also want to remind you to join us tomorrow, Friday, May 16th for the Cultural Explosion to Raise Scholarship Funds for OHS Spring Benefit. This important benefit is the culmination of the dedicated work of many for the benefit of our students, and we welcome your attendance and support! Click here for more information.
We continue to prepare for the Annual Budget Vote on May 20th. We encourage you to read the documents we have posted directly below these comments, so that you may be fully informed of the content of the proposed budget and process we have engaged. “Did
you know that…? 2007-2008
OHS Seniors
were accepted to prestigious colleges, including seven
Ivy League institutions, among others.
The Ossining
School District received the prestigious Arts Award from
the Westchester County Arts Council.
Ossining’s
beautiful fields and tracks attract everyone.
Fifty-one
students at Ossining High School earned the designation
of AP Scholar by the College Board in recognition of
their exceptional achievement on the college-level
Advanced Placement Program Exams.
OHS Science
Research students make an impressive showing at the 7th
Annual Westchester-Rockland Junior Science and
Humanities Symposium, the Westchester Science and
Engineering Fair, and the Young Epidemiology Scholars
Competition.
OHS Seniors
Micah Joselow, Caitlyn Lia, Yingna Liu, Andrei Popescu,
Asha Smith and Lauren Southwick were named Semifinalists
in the Intel Corporation’s prestigious Science Talent
Search 2008 competition. Ossining had the most
semifinalists of any Westchester County school district.
OHS Senior
Jessica Bailey completed the National Youth Leadership
forum on Medicine in Philadelphia, PA.
An original
composition by Anne M. Dorner 6th grade student Silvia
Roldan was performed at the 2007 12th Annual Electronic
Music Composition Showcase. AMD Theatre productions
received accolades.
OHS Seniors
Naomi Alpert, Adam DePaolo, Jennifer Hampton, Jesse
Ingber, Caitlyn Lia, Amy Monroe, Victoria Pollock,
Andrei Popescu, and Lee Saper were named Commended
Students in the 2008 National Merit Scholarship Program.
Ossining High
School Senior Brandon Allen was named an outstanding
participant in the 2008 National Achievement Scholarship
Program.
Deputy
Secretary for Education Dr. Manuel J. Rivera visited the
Ossining School District.
Senior
Bookkeeper Peggy Minelli was named “Employee of the
Year” by Rotary Club.
David and Ruth
Schultz, age 5 and 4, respectively, were honored for
having read or heard 1,000 books.
Ossining
School District teachers Matthew Clayton, Stephanie
Esposito, Tanya Lesser, and Marcie Variano received
National Board Certification.
Literacy Night
drew 154 parents to Park School.
The Ossining
High School Interact Club hosted the “Ossining Interacts
Night,” with proceeds supporting the purchase of
“Shelter Boxes” that contain a tent and equipment to
enable a family to survive in case of an extreme
emergency.
A new Black
and Latino male organization, Proud Young Leaders,
debuted at Claremont School.
Brookside
students shared drawing and musical talents during “Arts
Night.”
AMD students,
Evan Olin, Jason Hickey, and Benjamin Kumka, were chosen
to play in the New York State Band Directors Association
Symposium.
Ossining High
School was named a GRAMMY Signature School finalist by
the GRAMMY in the Schools Foundation.
OHS graduate
Francisco Bello was nominated for Academy Award.
“Recycling
Rangers” provided leadership at Claremont School.
Wellness Day and Fit Kids promoted positive health.
The Ossining
Alliance of Black School Educators (OABSE) was
officially recognized as the Ossining Chapter of the
National Alliance of Black School Educators.
Celebrated
speaker on educational experiences of African American
and Hispanic male students, Dr. Jawanza Kunjufu, spoke
at OHS.
OHS senior
Josalyn White signed a National Letter of Intent. OHS
boasted 17 Scholar Athlete Teams and 3 League
Championships and Sectional and Regional Championships.
IBM
researchers visited AMD for National Engineers Week.
Ossining High
School Seniors Jessica Palmer and Caitlyn Lia were named
to the Golden Dozen for Section I field hockey, based on
academics, attitude, commitment, skills, leadership and
community service.
OHS Senior
Jessica Palmer placed first nationwide in the 2007-2008
Young Epidemiology Scholars Competition, earning a
$50,000 college scholarship.
A film created
by OHS seniors Kevin Christie and Louis Crisci was
selected for the high school competition at the 9th
Annual Westchester Film Festival.
The Power of
Preschool Conference was held at Roosevelt School with
Regent Harry Phillips in attendance.
OHS Senior
Matthew Powell earned MVP in Wheelchair Basketball
Tournament.
Earth Science
For All arrived at AMD.
OHS students,
Olivia Oppedisano and Mike Ballou, submitted recordings
of songs they composed and performed to GRAMMY Career
Day which were selected for critique by Sony executives
and professional performers.
The Ossining
School District presented at two national conferences
with positive feedback. Three Ossining High School students won prizes for their creative work on display at Philipsburg Manor's Pretends to be Free: Imagining Runaway Slaves exhibition, in which high school students create artwork based on actual 18th-century runaway slave advertisements published in New York newspapers.
